For international patients considering varicose vein treatment in Korea, the practical question is often: what does this actually involve? How much time does it take? What happens at each step? What should I prepare before I arrive, and what should I expect when I go home?

This post walks through the complete treatment journey — from your first contact with the clinic through recovery and follow-up — with the specific goal of giving you a realistic picture of what the process looks like for an overseas patient.

Step 1: Pre-Travel Consultation

The journey begins before you book a flight. At da Re-Fit Clinic, international patients are encouraged to reach out before traveling for an initial remote consultation. This typically involves:

  • A description of your symptoms and their duration
  • Any previous investigations or treatments you've had
  • Photographs or video of the affected area if visible varicosities are present
  • Any prior duplex ultrasound reports, if available

Based on this information, we can provide a preliminary assessment of whether travel to Seoul for evaluation is likely to be worthwhile, and help you understand what the evaluation process will involve. We can also answer practical questions about timing, accommodation, and logistics.

Step 2: Arrival and Initial Consultation

Your first visit to the clinic involves a comprehensive evaluation. This is not a brief consultation — it is a thorough clinical assessment that forms the basis for all subsequent decisions.

The evaluation includes a detailed medical history, physical examination of your legs in the standing position, and a duplex ultrasound study. The duplex ultrasound is performed with you standing, which is the only position that accurately reflects the hemodynamic conditions under which reflux occurs. The study maps your superficial and deep venous anatomy, identifies any incompetent valve segments, and quantifies the extent and distribution of reflux.

After the study, you will receive a clear explanation of the findings — what was identified, what it means clinically, and what treatment options are appropriate for your specific situation. If treatment is indicated, the options available at da Re-Fit Clinic will be explained with their respective advantages and clinical evidence. If treatment is not indicated, that will be communicated directly.

Step 3: Treatment Planning and Scheduling

If you decide to proceed with treatment, the specific plan is determined by your duplex findings. Most patients with varicose vein disease have reflux originating from the great saphenous vein (GSV) along the inner thigh and calf, the small saphenous vein (SSV) along the back of the calf, or accessory tributaries.

Available treatment approaches at da Re-Fit Clinic include endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) using 1470nm radial fiber technology, VenaSeal (medical-grade cyanoacrylate closure), ClariVein (mechanochemical ablation), and targeted phlebectomy for surface branch varicosities. The appropriate approach — or combination of approaches — is selected based on anatomy, vein diameter, degree of reflux, and patient preference.

Step 4: The Procedure

Varicose vein procedures at da Re-Fit Clinic are performed under local anesthesia (tumescent anesthesia for thermal procedures) and do not require general anesthesia or hospitalization. The procedure room is fully equipped for ultrasound-guided interventions.

Procedure duration depends on the extent of treatment required: a unilateral GSV ablation typically takes 30–60 minutes; bilateral treatment or combined approaches may require 60–90 minutes. You will be ambulatory immediately after the procedure and discharged the same day.

Compression stockings are applied immediately after the procedure and are worn continuously for the first 48 hours, then during waking hours for 2–4 weeks depending on the procedure performed and the extent of treatment.

Step 5: Immediate Post-Procedure Period

The day following your procedure, a brief clinical review is performed. Treated veins are examined, compression is assessed, and any questions are addressed. Most patients have very little discomfort at this stage — some bruising and mild tenderness along the treated vein is normal and expected.

Walking is encouraged from day one. Prolonged sitting or standing should be minimized during the first week. Most patients can return to desk work within 1–3 days and to light exercise within 1–2 weeks.

Step 6: Return Travel and Long-Term Follow-Up

For most patients, return travel is feasible 3–5 days after the procedure, provided flight duration is reasonable and compression is maintained throughout. For longer flights, periodic in-flight ambulation and adequate compression are recommended.

Long-term follow-up — a duplex ultrasound to confirm closure of the treated vein at 4–6 weeks post-procedure — can be arranged with a vascular specialist in your home country. We provide documentation of the procedure performed, the technique used, and follow-up recommendations in English, which can be shared with your local physician.
